Empowering The Birth Client
As a birth and postpartum doula, it is a privilege and honor to serve families in my community and beyond. I encounter so many from all walks of life. I also like having well informed clients because I don’t want anyone to be taken advantage of. Unfortunately, this is a systemic problem in the world of birth. Moms are undermined at the most vulnerable points in their lives. This was one of the many reasons I had to take a step back from the hospital birth arena because of the lies and manipulations to get an end result in the doctor’s favor and not the birth parents. I tell my clients birth is a business. They look at me sheepishly and after a few months they get it. Some early on some after the baby has come and they are enlightened. Birth clients need to be empowered so that I can do my job and that the client can draw on their own strengths during birth.
Many go through life planning graduations, colleges, weddings, and honeymoons. However, when it comes to one of the most important times is a couple’s life, they leave the planning in hands of the medical professionals and this should not be so. I want moms and dads to take back their power and plan for their child’s birth. This is why I put together some viewing requirements for my clients.
Their assignment, should they choose to accept me as their doula and maternity coach, is to review the following movies: The Business of Being Born, Milk, and Pregnant in America. I cannot stress the importance of watching these movies before I begin working with them. I want them to examine them carefully. Even more so given the recent pandemic.
If you are planning to get pregnant or already pregnant, please hire a doula to help guide you through this important time in your life. Please watch the following movies, discuss them with your doula, your midwife, or your doctor. You will be glad you did. Let’s do this.
